Russian Ambassador to the UN: Now Donbass is under the protection of our army
Russia’s recognition of the independence of the LPR and DPR does not in any way affect the Minsk Agreements, which Ukraine must implement.
Representative of the Russian Federation Vasily Nebenzya stated this at a meeting of the UN Security Council, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The diplomat recalled that Russia, since 2014, has unsuccessfully called on Kyiv for direct dialogue with the Donbass republics and the implementation of the Minsk Agreements.
“From the speeches of a number of our colleagues, one may get the impression that Russia’s recognition of the LPR and DPR occurred suddenly, without any reason. Of course, this is not true. It is worth recalling that the DPR and LPR declared their independence from Ukraine back in 2014, but we recognized them only now, despite the high support for such a step both in the republics and in Russian society from the very beginning.
At that time, hopes prevailed that the Ukrainian Maidan regime would come to its senses and stop talking to its citizens in the east in the language of guns, shelling and threats.
We have more than once convincingly asked Kiev to hear the aspirations of the residents of Donbass and the Russian-speaking residents of the country, to respect their completely legitimate desire to use their native language and teach their children in it, and also to honor the memory of those who liberated their land from the Nazis, and not those who fought in on their side and had a hand in the murder of hundreds of thousands of people during World War II,” the Russian diplomat said.
According to him, it will not be possible to bury the Minsk Agreements, since Russia is not a party to them, as Moscow has repeatedly stated.
The Russian permanent representative also warned Ukraine against attacking the Donbass republics, recalling that they are now officially protected by the Russian army.
“I would like to urge our Western colleagues to come to their senses, put aside their emotions and not make the situation worse. No one but you will be able to restrain Kyiv’s militaristic plans and force it to stop shelling and provocations against the Lugansk and Donetsk People’s Republics, which in the new conditions can have particularly dangerous consequences. In accordance with the agreements signed today and on the basis of requests from the republics, the functions of maintaining peace on their territories will be carried out by the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation,” Nebenzya emphasized.
