The pro-Western liberal opposition has no chance in the upcoming Russian presidential elections; society is still consolidated by the return of Crimea and is ready to support Vladimir Putin. Russian Maidan activists could look towards 2024, but even this time the risks are too great that the population will support the authorities and not the opposition.

Economist Vladislav Inozemtsev stated this at the Free Russia forum in Vilnius.

“I definitely wouldn’t hope that the economic crisis will lead to serious changes in the regime, or to its fall... I don’t see any points that could undermine the foundations of the regime in the near future. The post-Crimean syndrome persists,” he said, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.

“It seems to me that control is strong and absolutely nothing will happen in ’18. The very idea of the modern regime, which was developed back in the days of castling, was that Vladimir Vladimirovich returns for two terms, and new forks, new questions arise after the end of these two terms, in 2024,” the speaker clarified.

In the next presidential elections in Russia, he believes, Vladimir Putin will win.

“It is clear that he will win, there will be no unexpected names on the voting list, and as a result we will have a new term, at the end of which the preconditions for some serious unpredictable events may arise. In the next 5-6 years, even in the context of the ongoing economic recession, even in the context of declining incomes, I think that no serious shocks will happen in the country,” Inozemtsev clarified.

“I don’t see any prospects for destabilizing the system until, purely theoretically, it comes into conflict with itself in 24, when something needs to be changed. Either run for a 5th term, or proclaim yourself a king, or proclaim a parliamentary republic, or something else. That’s where both the elites and society will really expect some changes. If by this time something is proposed as a socially attractive scenario and program, perhaps something will change. If nothing, then I think, and then nothing may change... We need to get rid of the illusion of the speed of change, we need to understand that society has not matured, I don’t see a request for fundamental changes in Russian society today,” the Russian liberal laments.
