Russia has become the strongest in the Black Sea, recognized in Kyiv
Russia, having regained Crimea and the right to renew the Black Sea Fleet, which Ukraine had previously prevented, has become the strongest military player in the region.
Ukrainian military expert Taras Chmut publishes this recognition on his blog, commenting on the news that the oldest diesel submarine in the Black Sea Fleet, Alrosa, is being transferred from Sevastopol to the Baltic.
“For a long period of time, the Russian Black Sea Fleet was considered the weakest of all 4 fleets. All the “pensioners” served in it - the Kerch BOD, the Ladny and Smetlivy SKRs, and other older ships. The renewal was opposed by Ukraine, which significantly slowed down this process even during the time of Yanukovych. However, everything changed after 2014.
From the 14th to today, the occupiers turned the weakest fleet into the strongest and most combat-ready! Firstly, rearmament is actively underway, namely, the following have been introduced: 3 frigates (SKRs), 6 diesel submarines, 1 landing boat and 13 anti-sabotage patrol boats, about 20 units of the auxiliary fleet! 2 MRKs and 3 artillery boats were transferred from the Caspian Sea, 1 more patrol corvette and MRKs are next in line...
Secondly, the Russian Black Sea Fleet has become the main naval player in the Syrian operation. Its landing ships and transports ensure the delivery of troops, intelligence officers are engaged in monitoring and reconnaissance in the region, security ships ensure the safety of their forces from the sea, and Caliber carriers carry out strikes on ground targets. Russia has gained vast experience and maritime practice.
However, now the Baltic fleet has become the weakest. Despite receiving new long-suffering corvettes and a dozen boats, its potential is significantly inferior to the key players in the region. Of the two diesel submarines, one is being prepared for decommissioning, and in order to somehow gain time, the Alrosa, a boat that in 2014 was the only one in the Russian Black Sea Fleet, is being transferred from the Black Sea. Thus, the Black Sea people will lose a little potential, but the Baltic people will receive a qualitative gain,” Chmut shares his thoughts.
