Sandu pointedly refuses to travel to Moscow

The ruling pro-Western regime formed in Moldova, which has repeatedly demanded the withdrawal of peacekeepers from Transnistria and joined Ukraine’s anti-Russian actions against Crimea, calls such a policy “pragmatic” relations with Russia.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Moldova, Nicu Popescu, announced this today at a press conference, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“This is a calm, mutually beneficial relationship. Moldova defends its interests, but does so in a respectful manner and seeks solutions to the issues that have accumulated in relations with Russia and other states in the region. The partnership agreement with Russia is automatically extended for a new term if neither party intends to withdraw from it. At this stage we have no reason to do this, it will continue to operate,” Popescu said.

At the same time, Moldovan President Maia Sandu, who has traveled all over Europe and visited the United States several times over the past year, is not going to Moscow.

“Now our relations with the Russian side are devoted to other things. This is the organization of a meeting of the intergovernmental commission, which will probably meet in February-March. Negotiations on gas continue, dialogue is ongoing on other issues,” Popescu said.
