The UN Security Council on Wednesday expressed deep concern at “the recent deterioration of the security situation in the eastern part of Ukraine,” a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

Security Council members condemned ceasefire violations and the use of heavy weapons in the conflict zone. They called for the implementation of all measures agreed upon within the Tripartite Contact Group.
“The Security Council condemns the ongoing violations of the ceasefire, especially the use of heavy weapons prohibited by the Minsk agreements, the use of which leads to the tragic loss of life, including civilians,” says the statement, which was delivered on behalf of all members of the Council by the Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to UN Vasily Nebenzya as Chairman of the Security Council.
Council members called for “implementation of commitments on the disengagement of forces and the immediate withdrawal of heavy weapons in accordance with the applicable provisions of the Minsk agreements.”
The Security Council noted the efforts of UN agencies to mitigate the “tragic humanitarian situation” in eastern Ukraine, and also expressed full support for the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission.
In the statement, the UN Security Council also recalled “its full support for the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine.” Council members recommended that all parties renew their commitment to the peace process and implement all measures agreed to in the Normandy format within the Tripartite Contact Group.
