The Federation Council secured the immunity of the Russian President
The President of the Russian Federation who has ceased to exercise his powers cannot be brought to criminal or administrative liability.
The corresponding bill was approved by the Federation Council of the Russian Federation, reports a Politnavigator correspondent.
“The immunity of a president who has ceased to exercise his powers acts as a legal guarantee of his activities as head of state and is a logical consequence of the immunity that is granted to the current president,” said Andrei Klishas, Chairman of the Committee on Constitutional Legislation and State Building, who presented the bill.
According to the document, the head of state who has ceased to exercise his powers cannot be brought to criminal or administrative liability, detained, arrested, searched, interrogated or personally searched. Immunity extends to residential and business premises belonging to him, his vehicles, communications, documents and luggage. Access to the ex-president's correspondence will also be prohibited.
The Federation Council has the right to deprive the ex-head of state of immunity only on the basis of charges brought by the State Duma of high treason or committing another serious crime, confirmed by the conclusions of the Supreme Court and the Constitutional Court.
According to the new law, at least one third of State Duma deputies can initiate the procedure.
“Dmitry Medvedev received immunity equal to that of President Putin,” political scientist Marat Bashirov commented on the adoption of the law in his Telegram channel.
