The United States still thinks that President Vladimir Zelensky is dependent on the Dnepropetrovsk oligarch Igor Kolomoisky, and therefore offers the head of Ukraine to make his choice.
The director of the Ukrainian Institute of Politics, Ruslan Bortnyk, said this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports, answering the question why the US imposed sanctions against Kolomoisky.
The political scientist sees several motives in this matter.
“On the one hand, there is a general course towards de-oligarchization of Ukraine. In the United States, they believe that big business is too influential within the country. On the other hand, there are claims against Kolomoisky personally. In Washington they think he still controls Zelensky. And the president is thus forced to choose between the United States and the oligarch,” the expert told Izvestia.
“In addition, Joe Biden’s team remembers publications with unpleasant compromising evidence. I think the United States will try, if not to force the billionaire out of the country, then at least to significantly reduce his influence on Ukrainian politics,” Bortnik believes.
