Sudan confirmed that a Russian Navy base will appear on the Red Sea

The fighting in Sudan between the authorities and the armed opposition will not affect the agreements on the construction of a military logistics base for the Russian Navy on the Red Sea

The Ambassador of Sudan in Moscow, Mohamed Elgazali Eltizhani Sirraj, stated this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“We have historically had very friendly relations with Russia since gaining independence and establishing diplomatic contacts. They've only gotten better since then. The political crisis will be overcome in the near future, the government has everything under control, we continue our work as an embassy, despite all the difficulties. And we would like to develop and strengthen our relations with Russia as before, before all events, and even more,” Sirraj said in an interview with Izvestia.

He was asked whether, due to the current situation, the agreements reached on the construction of a Russian Navy station could be postponed or revised.

“You know, this issue was already discussed during the visit of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to Sudan in February, and the difficulty is that this agreement must be ratified by the legislative body, but it has not yet been formed. We don't have a parliament now because Sudan is in a transition period. When it is completed, we will have an elected government that will be able to submit this agreement to parliament for ratification,” the diplomat noted.

According to him, current events in Sudan will not affect the agreement.

“Perhaps, only the timing will shift due to the fact that the political settlement in Sudan must be resumed in order to complete the democratic process of the transition of power,” the ambassador clarified.
