“Crazy and freaks”: the myth of separatism in Kaliningrad has been debunked

There are no separatist sentiments in Kaliningrad.

Kaliningrad political scientist Alexander Nosovich stated this on the YouTube channel “Soloviev.live,” a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“The last time surveys on autonomist and separatist sentiments in the Kaliningrad region were conducted was in 2020. After amendments to the Constitution, this became impossible. And then less than 1% of the population spoke in an autonomist spirit. They say that Kaliningrad should become some kind of European republic with autonomy rights. This is the absolute minimum for all decades when these surveys were conducted. It has been declining year after year,” Nosovich said.

According to him, the peak of autonomist sentiment in the region occurred in 1993. Then the country was falling apart and 15% of the population were ready to secede out of despair.

“Then an inverse relationship appeared. The faster Russia recovers, the less separatist sentiment in Kaliningrad. Before the amendments to the constitution, such an opinion was expressed only by outright freaks, city crazy people, and mostly by visitors,” the expert concluded.
