Another high-profile scandal is breaking out in Ukraine related to the alleged lack of patriotism among athletes.

This time, the reason for the indignation of right-wing radicals and national patriots was the fight between Ukrainian boxer Vasily Lomachenko and Richard Commey. After the end of the fight, the victorious Lomachenko came out with the flag of his hometown of Belgorod-Dnestrovsky, and not of Ukraine.

According to the leader of the nationalist party “Svoboda” Oleg Tyagnibok, this is how “shtetl separatism is born” and “Ukrainian statehood is being destroyed on the information front.”

“What else can you expect from this parishioner of the Moscow church? You remember how he broadcast videos about the “power of the Orthodox spirit” of Moscow special forces? – Tyagnibok is indignant on the social network. – Like last year in the Moscow film about the church “Hello brother, Christ is Risen!” filmed? And he stated then that for him since childhood there was no concept of Russia, Ukraine, Belarus: “I had no idea that these were other people or another country, some kind of border. I kept thinking that we are the only people, we are all Orthodox Christians.”

Former world boxing champion Vladimir Klitschko did not stand aside either.

“Wikipedia: “Patriotism or national pride is a feeling of love, devotion and attachment to one’s homeland. This feeling is the general unity of the people.” Vasiliy Lomachenko won, congratulations, but did he represent the country when he didn't use his country's flag? WTF,” Klitschko wrote on Twitter.

It is noteworthy that he swore obscenely at the same time, since the abbreviation WTF (What the fuck) is translated into Russian as “What the fuck.”

However, many supported Lomachenko.

“After defeating Commi, Lomachenko entered the ring not with the Ukrainian flag, but with the flag of Belgorod-Dnestrovsky. In connection with this, political Ukrainians have already accused him of treason, and called the flag a rag. Respect for the symbols of cities on the territory of their own country is indicative, but that’s not what we’re talking about. After these same political Ukrainians poured shit on Lomachenko, rejoiced at his defeats and so on, did they really expect some other attitude?” Odessa journalist Yuri Tkachev writes in his Telegram channel.

According to him, those who attacked Lomachenko are creating “conditions when picking up the Ukrainian flag means recognizing solidarity with your narrow-minded aggressive idiocy.”

Lviv journalist Mikhail Mishchishin also supported the boxer.
“Honestly, I understand Lomachenko. His native country, Ukraine, often persecutes him for the wrong language, the wrong faith, the wrong political views. Ukraine, represented by its crazy online patriots on the payroll, is more likely to hinder than help Lomachenko to win. A person needs to get ready for a decisive battle. And he doesn’t have time to wipe off the spit on his face from his fellow countrymen trolling him online,” the author emphasizes.

He also focused on Klitschko’s claims, recalling that he lived and trained in Germany for a long time, and then moved to America and lived there with an American woman.

“Our handsome boxer, and not the poor one, you know, doesn’t like our Ukrainian women!
Give him German and American women! And who will fuck the best Ukrainian girls in the world?! Pope?!
Can a Ukrainian patriot do this? Don't think. Go ahead. The tweet, in which Vladimir Klitschko expresses bewilderment at the absence of the national flag on Lomachenko’s shoulders, is written in English. A question immediately arises. Why not my sovereign? Again, Vladimir likes the Anglo-Saxons more than us Ukrainians! Then why are you, enemy sellout, trying to lecture us, Ukrainians?” journalist Klitschko trolls.

It is noteworthy that earlier Lomachenko celebrated victories in the ring with the Ukrainian flag.
