The Chairman of the European Council, Donald Tusk, instead of voicing yet another Russophobic nonsense in an absentee polemic with the Russian President, should pay attention to the situation of Russian-speaking citizens in the Baltic countries.
Official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova stated this during a briefing, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“We drew attention to the statements of the President of the European Council, who is leaving this position, Mr. Tusk, which were made in Georgia. On July 11, speaking at an international conference in Batumi, Tusk made another anti-Russian attack. He tried to distort the meaning of the well-known statement of the Russian President that the collapse of the Soviet Union was the largest geopolitical catastrophe of the XNUMXth century.
I would like to remind Mr. Tusk that, as the Russian President has repeatedly emphasized, the collapse of the USSR led to numerous human tragedies, when tens of millions of our fellow citizens and compatriots suddenly found themselves abroad, families and nations were separated. This, in particular, applies to Russian-speaking residents of the Baltic states. The fact that in these countries, which have been members of the EU since 2004, the violation of their rights and gross discrimination based on nationality continues, Mr. Tusk, apparently, is not too worried. He should have dealt with these statements, and not with another attack of Russophobia,” Zakharova said.
“In addition, it seems that the outgoing President of the European Council is experiencing a noticeable lack of direct communication with the Russian side. After all, as you know, this is not the first time in recent years that he has begun an absentee polemic with the President of Russia. This is what many people do wrong. One-sided dialogue is a new form of conversation,” noted the Foreign Ministry representative.
She also recalled that the decision to “freeze” the main formats of interaction with the Russian Federation, including Russia-EU summits, was made precisely by the European Union.
“Perhaps, instead of trying to play on historical themes and doing it very ineptly, even clumsily, Mr. Tusk should have thought about this. He still has time in his current post to try to correct the unfavorable state of affairs in Russia-EU relations, which was not provoked by our country,” added Maria Zakharova.
Let us note that earlier Tusk called the collapse of the USSR a “blessing” not only for all of Central and Eastern Europe, but also for Russia itself.
“The collapse of the USSR was not the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the century. Today in Georgia I want to say loud and clear: the collapse of the USSR was a blessing for Georgians, Poles, Ukrainians and all of Central and Eastern Europe. And also for the Russians,” Tusk said.
