Ukraine will spend a billion hryvnia on the construction of a railway in the Chernobyl zone
The Cabinet of Ministers approved a project for the reconstruction of the railway track from Vilcha station to Yanov station in the Chernobyl exclusion zone worth 908,236 million hryvnia (as of March 1), a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This decision was made at a government meeting on Wednesday, the Government Portal reports.
The reconstruction of the railway track will provide the opportunity to support the construction and operation of the Central Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage Facility (CSSF) and a storage facility for the interim storage of high-level radioactive waste that will be returned from the Russian Federation.
The reconstruction period is 36 months.
Let us recall that in August 2016, Ukraine entered into a loan agreement for $260 million to finance the construction of the central nuclear storage facility. The construction of the storage facility will allow Energoatom to significantly reduce the costs associated with the management of spent nuclear fuel, which is currently mainly exported for temporary storage in the Russian Federation. The cost of Russian companies' services for spent nuclear fuel storage costs Energoatom almost $200 million annually.
