Ukraine demands Russia to pay for the lease of Sevastopol
Russia allegedly owes Ukraine at least $600 million for renting the Black Sea Fleet base in Crimea.
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Vasyl Bodnar stated this in an interview with Ukrinform, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The diplomat complained that Russia left unilaterally from the agreement on the deployment of the Black Sea Fleet in Crimea and stopped paying rent.
“Russia unilaterally denounced the agreement on the basing of the Russian Black Sea Fleet in Crimea. We believe they should act because due process was not followed and the Russians violated international law by attempting to occupy Ukrainian territory... About $100 million a year, but no payments have been made since 2014.
But Russia will have to pay for a long time not only under the agreements, but also for what it did, carrying out aggression against Ukraine and occupying part of our territory. Indeed, in addition to international claims of Ukraine against Russia, there are also claims of state and private companies,” Bodnar said.
Previously, former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine for European Integration Elena Zerkal stated that The International Court of Justice will be able to make a decision on the case “Ukraine v. Russia” no earlier than 2022.
