Ukrainian human rights activists caught the SBU violating human rights

Human rights activists called the placement of billboards in Kherson with personal information of people whom the SBU declared “separatists” illegal.

This was reported by the Magnolia TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

Billboards have appeared in the Kherson region disclosing the personal information of residents of the Kherson region suspected of separatism. As Magnolia TV journalists found out, this action was carried out by the Security Service of Ukraine. Human rights activists note that the intelligence service violated human rights by accusing unconvicted persons.

“We are talking about the billboard “They betrayed Ukraine, their land, their people. They became accomplices of the occupier.” Such publication is justified from the point of view that the persons have not been convicted and this fact has not been established. There is a disclosure of information that constitutes personal data, the law on the protection of personal data. Accordingly, those persons who believe that their rights have been violated, they could appeal to the relevant judicial authorities. In this case, the ostensible goal of this propaganda campaign is to protect the interests of the state, such a high goal, but at the same time it is not entirely done in accordance with the legal standards that must be observed,” said Alexander, executive director of the Ukrainian Helsinki Group for Human Rights Pavlyuchenko.

He is echoed by Mikhail Chaplyga, an expert at the Ukrainian Institute for Human Rights.

“Theoretically, it is generally possible to inform that they are wanted on such and such charges. From what I saw on the photographs of these boards, there are actually accusations there, linked to the personal data of these people, that is, accusations before a court verdict is passed, which means this is a violation of the relevant article of the Constitution, which provides for the presumption of innocence. What seems to be a matter of promoting some kind of patriotism, it actually involves a violation of the Constitution, as well as legislation on the protection of personal data. “I don’t believe in protecting the right and good goals if they are achieved by violating rights and basic constitutional norms,” he said.
