NATO ships will not help Ukraine feel like a master in the Sea of Azov. The former commander of the Ukrainian Navy, Sergei Gaiduk, stated this on the UA: Crimea TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The vice admiral emphasized that the balance of power in the region will not be changed by one-time visits by NATO ships.
“The theoretical entry of NATO ships or ships of Germany and France, which was proposed by US Vice President Pence, would not generally change the operational situation and the situation in the Sea of Azov... One-time visits and visits or, let’s say, a visit associated with certain tactical exercises , would not have given the effect needed for the situation that has developed in the Sea of Azov.
We must talk about the complexity of the waters of the Sea of Azov, which due to its geographical conditions does not allow for free maneuvering. The voyage follows the corresponding recommended deep routes, where the depths allow for certain transportations. Therefore, in this situation, I believe that Ukraine should rely primarily on itself,” said Gaiduk.
