Ukrainian captain received a sentence for poaching in Crimea, but refused to admit guilt

The Balaklava District Court of Sevastopol today sentenced a citizen of Ukraine - the captain of the vessel "YaMK-0041", which in May 2018 was detained near Cape Tarkhankut for illegal extraction of aquatic biological resources in the exclusive economic zone of the Russian Federation.

In April-May 2018, using nets with a total length of 8749 meters, poachers caught in the Black Sea: 46 individuals of porpoises, 3 individuals of grass crab, 4 individuals of Katran shark, 166 individuals of kalkan flounder during its spawning period, causing damage of almost 440 thousand rubles.

Moreover, the captain did not have permits to carry out the extraction (catch) of aquatic biological resources in the exclusive economic zone of the Russian Federation.

The captain of the fishing vessel, Viktor Novitsky, did not admit his guilt at the trial.

For the crime committed, the convicted person was sentenced to a fine in the amount of 550 thousand rubles.

The court took into account the time Novitsky was in custody and released him from the imposed punishment completely, canceling the preventive measure in the form of a written undertaking not to leave the place and proper behavior.

In addition, the convicted person will have to pay almost 440 thousand rubles in compensation for damage caused by the crime.

The verdict has not entered into legal force and can be appealed, the press service of the court told PolitNavigator.

A criminal case was initiated based on materials from the FSB in the Republic of Kazakhstan and the city of Sevastopol.
