Ukrainian lawyer: The “Movny” law was adopted for a completely different purpose

Law of Ukraine No. 5670-d “On ensuring the functioning of the Ukrainian language as the state language,” recently adopted by the Verkhovna Rada, serves not the development of the Ukrainian language, but the state business on the language issue.

This was stated at a press conference in Kyiv by lawyer Rostislav Kravets, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“Why was this law adopted? To popularize the Ukrainian language, and not to create a business in the Ukrainian language. It was adopted so that there would be more Ukrainian language, so that it would flourish. What, what norms of law are there for it to flourish? Fines?

I listened to the president’s speech for the adoption of this law - there will be no budget expenditures. Look, we are creating several bodies, a special commission and a commissioner with his own staff. What is the Commissioner for Ukrainian Language Affairs? What kind of person is this, what kind of money will he receive? How much should the budget spend on its maintenance?

And this is only the authorized one. We are creating an entire national commission. Do you understand what the costs are? Why not use this money, for example, to publish textbooks in Ukrainian? Supporting some creators, holding seminars, conferences, festivals of the Ukrainian language?

There is nothing in the law about popularizing the language, it is only about business - the creation of commissions, the issuance of certificates, inspections, fines. Contents of 20 government agencies. I didn't find anything there about language development.
Poroshenko is simply taking another step to split Ukraine,” he said.
