The European Parliament is putting pressure on Serbia because of its refusal to impose sanctions against the Russian Federation

A group of socialists and democrats in the European Parliament proposed to suspend negotiations on Serbia's accession to the EU, since Belgrade did not impose sanctions against Russia, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

As the press secretary of this parliamentary group, Inga Cherny Grim, said, we are talking about introducing a corresponding amendment to the report on EU enlargement.

“The author of the report is Croatian MP Tonino Pitsula, and the reason for this proposal is that Serbia has not imposed sanctions against Russia and has not joined the foreign policy of the European Union, as is expected of EU candidate countries,” said Cerni Grim.

Voting on the draft report on EU enlargement is expected on October 13 in the Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament.

A spokeswoman for the Socialists and Democrats group was unable to say what the position of other political groups in the European Parliament is on this issue.

The final text of the EU enlargement report will be adopted in the form of a European Parliament resolution, which is expected to be voted on in November.

Although EP resolutions are not legally binding either for member states or for other European institutions, they are regularly used as an instrument of political pressure.
