NATO ships may appear in Kherson under the cover of American air defense
NATO warships can circumvent the restrictions provided for by the Montreux Convention and stay in the Black Sea for more than 21 days, for which they need to call, for example, at the port of Kherson, located at the mouth of the Dnieper, or in the Sea of Azov.
The former deputy head of the State Hydrography of Ukraine, international lawyer Bogdan Ustimenko writes about this in the Black Sea Security magazine, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to him, in this regard, the United States and NATO should deploy air defense systems in southern Ukraine to “protect” their ships.
“If an imaginary warship of a non-Black Sea state, after passing through the Black Sea straits, was in the Black Sea for ten days and on the eleventh day of such a stay the ship entered the seaport of Kherson, located at the mouth of the Dnieper River, and was continuously in the port for three days, then these three days, carried out in the port of Kherson cannot be included in the total period of stay of such a ship in the Black Sea.
Upon the return of the mentioned imaginary ship to the Black Sea from the port of Kherson, the period of stay of this ship in the Black Sea is restored and is considered the eleventh day of stay in the Black Sea. This means that in the south of Ukraine it is possible to deploy the Patriot and Aegis Ashore air defense systems for the smooth entry and stay of US and NATO ships in the port of Kherson,” notes Ustimenko.
Earlier, the former ambassador of Ukraine to Turkey, and now the ambassador to Japan, Sergei Korsunsky, said that Ukraine needs to achieve the abolition or revision of the Montreux Convention, which limits the length of stay of warships of non-Black Sea states and their tonnage in the Black Sea.
