Georgy Kryuchkov, People's Deputy of Ukraine of the 3rd and 4th convocations, former head of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Committee on National Security and Defense, stated this in a commentary to PolitNavigator.
“More people gathered in Kyiv than last year. There were several times more of those carrying portraits. Whether we like it or not, the “Immortal Regiment” has entered the consciousness of people as their own, vital cause, the memory of those who defended the independence, freedom, and honor of our great Motherland. This is the main result of the past celebration. Society did not succumb to pressure to eradicate the memory of the Great Patriotic War, the victory of the Soviet people and the friendship of peoples. This is something that the government cannot do despite all that it does. For me, this is the main result,” said the politician.
“I walked with everyone to the end of the procession. Not three thousand people took part in it, as officially reported; there were at least thirty thousand of them in Kyiv. I saw the reaction of these people to how in some places Bandera’s supporters tried to shout something. The people are ripening into rejection of all this policy being pursued by the current government, and the people have shown this. In most cities, people came out on May 9, to celebrate Victory Day and pay tribute to their relatives and friends who participated in the war. The authorities' attempt to postpone the celebration of the victory to May 8 failed. This is an absolutely immoral attempt to replay the results of the war without war, to include Bandera among the winners.
How can you rape people's memory like that? This is a crime of the current regime against the people. This regime will still commit atrocities, the “Memory Rape Institute” will still scream, but the people have shown that they do not accept this. For the authorities, the most terrible thing was the guards ribbon. We warned in advance - do not come out with your symbols, we tried to do everything so that there were no reasons for conflicts. Why was there a Bandera flag at the stele with the sacred fire? The victory was won under the red banner, and not under Bandera’s. I heard people shouting “Kyiv is a hero, away from Kyiv the Banderaites!” For me, all this was a sign that all was not lost. We saw how something that was brewing in the depths of people’s souls began to manifest itself,” Kryuchkov concluded.
