It became known from a message on the website of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, which posted condolences from the head of the Ukrainian parliament Andrey Parubiy relatives of the deceased. Parubiy calls the death of the publisher “an irreparable loss.”
“With deep sorrow I learned about the death of the famous Ukrainian philanthropist, literary critic, publisher, writer, founder of the Smoloskip publishing house Osip Stepanovich Zinkevich.
In the memory of everyone who knew Osip Zinkevich, he will remain a principled fighter for Ukrainian independence, a true patriot of Ukraine, who devoted his life primarily to conveying the truth to the inhabitants of all countries of the free world about everything that happened during the Soviet occupation in Ukraine. He faithfully served the Ukrainian people and his native land!” Parubiy’s text of condolences says.
“During the turbulent times of World War II, Osip Zinkevich ended up in Germany, then in France, where he became an active participant in Ukrainian organizations, worked in the editorial office of the legendary newspaper “Ukrainian Word”, and also created the famous Ukrainian magazine “Smoloskip”, added Parubiy.
After moving to the USA, the publishing house of Osip Zinkevich published a number of dissidents and nationalists banned in the USSR: Les Kurbas, Mikhail Osadchy, Oleg Olzhych, Elena Teliga, Oles Berdnik, Vasily Symonenko, Vasily Stus, Valentin Moroz, Vyacheslav Chernovol and dozens of others, like Andrey Parubiy put it “Ukrainian luminaries and giants of the spirit.”
After the declaration of independence of Ukraine, Osip Zinkevich returned to Ukraine with his family and moved here the diaspora publishing house “Smoloskip”, which continued the same activities as in the diaspora.
Osip Zinkevich was the organizer and first chairman of the Museum-Archive of Ukrainian Samizdat in Ukraine (1998). He compiled a lot of books, including “Ukrainian Human Rights Movement”, “Ukrainian Helsinki Group” and “Encyclopedia of the Dissident Movement”.
Vitaly Kulik, a political scientist close to the Ukrainian special services and director of the Center for Research on Civil Society Problems, also paid tribute to the “beacon”.
“The role of Mr. Zinkevich in the formation of a new generation of creative people, Ukrainian scientists in the 1990s-2000s is invaluable! His publishing house “Smoloskip” has published thousands of books by young authors who today are famous poets, writers, political scientists, and historians,” wrote Vitaly Kulik.
