Hungary’s initiative to curtail NATO support for Ukraine will not find support in the Alliance. Former US Ambassador to Ukraine John Herbst stated this on the Ukrainian TV channel “Direct”.
“In general, members of the Alliance (I’m not talking about all of them) understand that the problems that arose on Orban’s initiative (Viktor Orban, Prime Minister of Hungary – ed.) are unfair, and we need to somehow overcome them. Therefore, this slightly ridiculous policy of Orban will not become a problem for Ukraine in Brussels,” Hirst said.
He criticized the Hungarian Prime Minister.
“Mr Orbán is not a supporter of real freedom. We see this in his politics at home. Therefore, his accusations against Ukraine do not sound correct. We know that although there are some difficulties with Ukraine's national minority legislation, in general human rights lawyers in Europe do not believe that the current situation in Ukraine is that bad,” Herbst said.
