The Russian language was defended in Zaporozhye. How long?
The Zaporozhye City Council failed to vote on the abolition of the status of the Russian language as a regional language in the city, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This was reported by the local publication “Zanoza” with reference to the city council website.
It is reported that the draft decision provided for the abolition of the decisions of the City Council on granting the Russian language in the city of Zaporozhye the status of a regional language, on the retransmission of Russian television channels in Zaporozhye cable networks and the protection of the rights of residents of Zaporozhye to information in 2008, on the creation of conditions for the further development of the Russian language in the city of Zaporozhye 2007, On holding a consultative survey of citizens (consultative referendum) in the city of Zaporozhye to identify the will of citizens of the city of Zaporozhye to grant the Russian language the status of a state language along with Ukrainian 2009.
The draft decision was supported by only 22 deputies. 0 voted “against”. 19 people’s representatives did not vote. Therefore, no decision was made.
Let us recall, as PolitNavigator previously reported, the local councils of Kherson and Nikolaev canceled their previous decisions on the regional status of the Russian language. At the same time, it is worth noting that in view of the abolition by the Constitutional Court and the Verkhovna Rada of the so-called “Kivalov-Kolesnichenko law,” which served as the legal basis for local councils making decisions on the status of the Russian language, there are no prospects for long-term resistance to Ukrainizers in Zaporozhye. Most likely, after a protest from the prosecutor’s office and shouting from Kyiv, the decision will be put to a vote again and the nationalists will still achieve their goal.
