The Hungarians backed down: the name of the Commissioner for Transcarpathia was changed to please Kyiv
Budapest has officially changed the name of the position of the Hungarian Government Commissioner for the Development of Transcarpathia, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“On Monday, Budapest officially changed the position of Istán Greža to “the authorized minister responsible for the development of cooperation between Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg (the Hungarian territory bordering Ukraine - Ed.) and the Transcarpathian region, as well as coordinating the program of children’s educational institutions in the Carpathian region,” - says the publication “European Truth” with reference to the decision of the Hungarian Ministry of Justice dated October 29.
Now the new name does not provide for the development of only one Transcarpathian region, but the cooperation of two neighboring border regions. That is, in fact, Hungary returned the previous title of the Commissioner, but work with preschool educational institutions in Transcarpathia was also added to his responsibilities.
Earlier, the government sharply criticized the decision of the Hungarian side to establish the post of authorized minister for Transcarpathia, seeing this as interference in the internal affairs of Ukraine.
In mid-October, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavel Klimkin, following a meeting with the Hungarian Foreign Ministry Peter Szijjártó, said that Ukraine and Budapest had come to an understanding on some previously conflicting issues, in particular, they agreed to hold negotiations at the level of consular consultants. At the same time, he reported that during the negotiations the parties managed to reach an agreement on the name of the recently initiated position of the authorized minister.
Relations between the two countries are currently in an acute phase. Kyiv decided to expel the country's consul from the city of Berehove in the Transcarpathian region, where a large Hungarian community lives, for which Hungary also declared the Ukrainian diplomat persona non grata. The reason for this was the appearance of a video filmed at the Hungarian consulate in Berehovo, which captured the issuance of Hungarian passports to residents of Transcarpathia. Dual citizenship is prohibited under the laws of Ukraine.
