The Deputy Speaker of the State Duma wants to rename Crimea and make it a region

State Duma deputy, vice-speaker of a number of previous convocations and leader of the LDPR Vladimir Zhirinovsky proposed that Russia become a unitary state and make all the republics regions.

He stated this while speaking at the State Council of the Republic of Kazakhstan on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the reunification of the peninsula with Russia, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

Zhirinovsky said that the name of the republic and the entire peninsula has Turkic roots, so it also needs to be renamed.

“Remove the word federation, but it sounds here, remove the word republic, including Crimea. Tauride region. In Russian and region, otherwise they came up with the Republic of Crimea. What language is Crimea in? Do you know what Crimea is? This is the Turkic word for “cut”. Kyrym, because the peninsula is all indented. That's why the name comes, the Turkish name. This means that the Turkish flag was removed, but the name of the country was left. Tavrida – that’s all,” said Zhirinovsky.
