You can’t drink water from Sevastopol springs – ecologist

Most of Sevastopol's underground springs provide water undrinkable.

Galina Sigora, associate professor of the Department of Technosphere Safety at SevSU, stated this on air on the First Sevastopol TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

According to the scientist, studies have shown that the water in these springs, located within the city, contains a large amount of nitrates, which are sometimes ten times higher than normal.

“It is very important from what depth the well, from what underground horizons, water is drawn. The quality of water also depends on this. We won a grant from the Russian Foundation for Basic Research - the Russian Foundation for Basic Research - two years ago and were directly involved, the grant has not yet ended, we are engaged in assessing the quality of spring waters in the Sevastopol region.

We have created an interactive map - everyone comes in completely free of charge, sees the map, clicks on the spring - a window appears in which it is written - we evaluate the quality of water by 23 or more indicators. Regularly for two years. And we will be very grateful if someone names more springs that we have not covered, because it is clear that to date we have examined 73 springs, many of them repeatedly.

And it must be said that those springs that are located within the city of Sevastopol, precisely as an urban part, are almost all polluted. This water cannot be drunk not only after boiling, but simply cannot be drunk, because the main type of pollution is nitrates,” said Sigora.
