So far, it does not seem that the new President of Ukraine, Vladimir Zelensky, is committed to peace in Donbass.
This opinion was expressed in a commentary to Moskovsky Komsomolets by Kiev political scientist Alexey Yakubin, giving an assessment visit by the president Ukrainian soldiers on the contact line in Donbass.
“On the one hand, Zelensky went to Donbass in civilian clothes, taking with him only a helmet and body armor. This greatly distinguished him from Poroshenko and Turchynov, who always tried to be as much like soldiers as possible,” the expert said.
According to him, many interpreted this approach as Zelensky’s lack of a militaristic attitude.
“On the other hand, he said nothing about the civilian population,” Yakubin noted. – Zelensky’s supporters expected that he would appear not only in the trenches, but also at checkpoints, communicate with people who have been living under constant shelling for 5 years, and so on. Apparently, Poroshenko’s legacy is trying to persuade the new president not to change anything. The question arises whether Zelensky is ready to cut the “Gordian Knot” of Donbass.”
