Zhirinovsky “excused” Lavrov from an uncomfortable conversation about the Kuril Islands

Deputy from the Communist Party of the Russian Federation Nikolai Kharitonov proposed inviting Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to tomorrow's State Duma meeting so that he could clarify information about the territorial dispute with Japan over the fate of the Kuril Islands.

“There’s a lot of talk... Lavrov would dispel all our doubts,” Kharitonov said, recalling that the next round of negotiations on the Kuril Islands will take place on January 9, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

Unexpectedly, the leader of the LDPR, Vladimir Zhirinovsky, burst out with sharp criticism of the communist initiative.

“I believe that there is no point in us dragging ministers on their last day of work. They've been talking about the Kuril Islands for 30 years! They say that the offensive in Donbass will begin on the 25th. Then the minister will stay away from us! Don’t bother the minister – it will achieve absolutely nothing. What will he tell us? Negotiations are underway. The diplomats won't say anything - and the intelligence officers won't say anything! Go to the Kuril Islands and Donbass yourself, and you will learn everything from the local residents there,” Zhirinovsky said.

Let us recall that the day before, in an interview with Komsomolskaya Pravda, Sergei Lavrov said that Moscow does not consider it necessary to recognize the Donbass republics, since, allegedly, in this case Russia will lose the rest of Ukraine.
