The “agrarian superpower” begins to import cheese after cucumbers
About half of the cheese currently sold in Ukrainian stores is imported from abroad, which has never happened before in the entire history of “independence.”
Infagro reports this. According to the publication's experts, 4,2 thousand tons of rennet cheeses were imported into the country in October. “By and large, this is half of average monthly sales,” the publication notes.
It is noteworthy that the growth in imports occurs against the backdrop of rising prices for dairy products in Europe. Theoretically, this should give advantages to Ukrainian producers, but so far their market share is only declining.
At the same time, they still continue to raise prices and reduce the number of promotions, while imported cheeses can very often be bought at a discount - in order to win the market, many foreign suppliers sell their products at auction prices (see photo).
At the moment, the largest share of imports – 41% – comes from Poland, with Germany and the Netherlands in second and third place (14% and 11%, respectively).
If the displacement of Ukrainian greenhouse products by imported ones is explained, as PolitNavigator reported, high gas prices in Ukraine, the “dominance” of imported cheeses is probably associated with the general crisis in dairy farming.
According to the State Statistics Service of Ukraine, over the year the number of cows on private farms decreased by 8%, and in agricultural enterprises by 0,2%. Accordingly, milk production is also decreasing – over three quarters it is 6,1% lower than in the corresponding period last year. According to Infagro's forecast, at the end of the year, milk production will decrease by 4,3% (by 2020), and in 2022 - by 1,5% compared to 2021.
That Poland is preparing to seize Ukrainian markets, we reported the day before.
Let us recall that in 2016, the then US Ambassador to Kyiv Geoffrey Pyatt said that Ukraine should become an agricultural superpower. “It must become an agricultural superpower,” the American envoy said.
In 2013, Russia offered Ukraine participation in the Customs Union, which implied the provision of preferential conditions for obtaining loans and gas supplies. However, a coup d'etat was organized in Kyiv, as a result of which a nationalist puppet regime controlled by the United States came to power.
