An American magazine remembered Babchenko

The American edition of Time on Tuesday announced Jamal Khashoggi and other journalists as “Person of the Year” according to the magazine in 2018, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

On the cover of the publication is Jamal Khashoggi, a journalist, columnist and writer from Saudi Arabia, known for his critical statements regarding the current policies of Riyadh.

On October 2, it became known that Khashoggi went to the Saudi Arabian Consulate General in Istanbul to complete documents, and has not been in touch since then. He is believed to have been killed on the orders of the Saudi crown prince, and his death has sparked international outcry and scrutiny of the Saudi regime.

The publication remembered many journalists from around the world, including the four journalists killed during the mass shooting in Maryland in July this year and the Reuters journalists convicted in Myanmar.

They also remembered the Russian propagandist Arkady Babchenko, who fled to Ukraine.

“Babchenko spent years as a Russian war correspondent, arriving in Kyiv in 2017 after his criticism of the Kremlin led to threats against him. Last spring, when the Ukrainian intelligence service warned of a plot to kill him, he faked his own death in a sting operation designed to catch the masterminds of the murder—a controversial move in the world of journalism,” Time wrote about him.

Как PolitNavigator previously reported, among others, Vladimir Putin, Donald Trump and the wife of the British prince Meghan Markle were nominated for the award.
