Today it is worth thinking about how to achieve a truce in eastern Ukraine, but there is no need for a debate on Crimea.

This was stated by German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel in an interview with Kolner Stadt-Anzeiger, commenting on the words of the chairman of the German Free Democratic Party Christian Lindner regarding Crimea that caused anger and displeasure in Kiev, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“I believe Mr. Lindner was only concerned about the headlines. We don't need a debate on Crimea. We need to think about how to achieve a truce in eastern Ukraine. This is a precondition for us to move step by step towards greater easing with Russia. Unfortunately, Mr. Lindner did not make any contribution,” said Sigmar Gabriel.
Let us recall that in an interview with the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper, published on August 5, the leader of the Free Democratic Party of Germany expressed the opinion that “for now, Crimea should be considered as a temporary solution for an indefinite period.” In his opinion, the conflict around the peninsula should be “separated” from other topics in order to achieve progress in other areas.
At the same time, the representative of the German government, Ulrike Demmer, confirmed the immutability of Germany’s official position, according to which “the annexation of Crimea by Russia violated the principles of international law and called into question the post-war order in Europe.”
