Shovel Impact: Lithuania is going to rename Russia

The Committee on the Future of the Lithuanian Seimas is starting a discussion on whether it makes sense to change the toponym “Russia” in the Lithuanian language.

This was stated by the head of the committee, Raimundas Lopata, as reported by the PolitNavigator correspondent, as quoted by the Lithuanian publication Verslo zinios.

According to him, politicians will look for a solution based on the conclusions of historian Alfred Bumblauskas, which he will present to the Sejm in his report.

Lopata believes that Russian President Vladimir Putin “supports the war he started in Ukraine with a distorted and false history, so in Lithuania it is worth asking whether the historical role of Russia is not perceived distortedly in the minds of the West - like the very name of the country.

“We call Russia Russia because that’s what Russia calls itself in the first place. Looking from the historical point of view of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, we will look for a more acceptable and accurate assessment of the historical role of this country for Lithuania and the West than the Great Russian narrative that has become entrenched in the minds of Westerners,” said the head of the committee.

“Accordingly, we will clarify what should be the correct name for the country that we traditionally call Russia: either Russia, or Muscovy, or something else,” Lopata said.

Previously, as PolitNavigator reported, in Poland they officially decided that they would call Russian Kaliningrad in the Polish manner Krulevets.
