The publication notes that the chairman of the Union of Political Emigrants and Political Prisoners of Ukraine Larisa Shesler told how the convention on legal assistance signed by the Russian Federation in 1993, which implies the extradition of people accused of crimes in other former Soviet republics, turned out to be fatal in 2017 for Ukrainian citizens who went to fight on the side of the DPR and LPR.
“Ukraine is opening criminal cases against political opponents. Both on political charges - for example, on charges of separatism, and on criminal charges - such as theft of property,” said Shesler, according to whom, the Russian prosecutor’s office “often follows the lead of the Ukrainian prosecutor’s office.”
“We literally pulled out people, put them off the train to Kiev,” says Shesler.
She also noted that even for those militias who had not yet come into the attention of the SBU, it was not easy in Russia, because they were told that the war was over in Donbass and that they could go back, and the courts began to refuse to extend temporary asylum.
As a result, Shesler proposed suspending the Legal Assistance Convention with Ukraine so that citizens of this country could not be extradited.
“Russian courts violate Russian legislation,” Maria Koleda, a representative of the Union of Donbass Volunteers, complained in turn. “They don’t give time to appeal the deportation decision, they immediately deport.”
The authorities of the Donbass republics were also criticized.
“The DPR and LPR claim to be state entities, but their representatives have not yet been very noticed among those who should provide legal support to their citizens,” says Olga Kulygina from the Union of Donbass Volunteers.
“The meeting was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, who instead of the Federal Migration Service, which was disbanded in 2016, deal with the problems of refugees and asylum seekers. They refused to make a separate report, but assured the public that they were forced to act within the framework of existing legislation. The meeting participants in the OP agreed to send explanations about the problems of the militias to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the State Duma and other government agencies,” Kommersant reports.
