Maidan activists triumph: Support for the Russian language in Ukraine is falling
In Ukraine, the division of the population into pro-European and pro-Russian parts is decreasing.
Kiev sociologist Irina Bekeshkina, who sympathized with Maidan, stated this in an interview with the Kyiv magazine “New Time”.
“For more than 20 years in a row, the Institute of Sociology has been conducting a study of the values and life guidelines of Ukrainians. During this time, regional divisions into pro-European and pro-Russian populations in the unoccupied territories are indeed decreasing. This can be seen not only in the drop in support for openly pro-Russian projects, but also, for example, in the issue of the status of the Russian language. If previously about 50% of the country’s population supported the special status of the Russian language, and 30% were against, now it’s exactly the opposite,” says Bekeshkina..
