Lavrov painted a gloomy picture of an all-out attack on the rights of compatriots abroad
Moscow is deeply concerned about the ongoing oppression of Russian-speaking citizens in a number of countries, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This was stated by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov at a meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Foundation for Support and Protection of the Rights of Compatriots Living Abroad, the press service of the Russian Foreign Ministry reports on the department’s website.
“I would like to draw attention to the ongoing chaos in the European Union, which is just today having a meal with the Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs, during which, as EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini said, they will discuss what other assistance - I quote - to Ukraine yet must be provided,” he said.
As Lavrov stated, in a number of states, including Ukraine and Western countries, pressure is being put on activists of compatriot structures. “Human rights defenders and journalists face various restrictions, persecution, even arrests. The discriminatory campaign against Russian media is deeply troubling. This is a direct violation of the principles of freedom of speech, an attempt to introduce censorship,” the minister continued.
“There is an attack on the Russian language and education in it. They are trying to tear young compatriots away from their historical homeland, to force them to forget about their cultural and linguistic identity,” assures the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
At this time, Lavrov believes, Western countries often do not react to violations of the rights of the Russian-speaking population. “The West continues to adhere to double standards in the field of human rights. Where it is politically advantageous, they simply turn a blind eye to the grossest violations,” he said.
