The US Embassy demands the “immediate release” of Sentsov so that he “personally receives” 50 thousand euros from the EU
Russia must “immediately release” Ukrainian terrorist Oleg Sentsov so that he can personally receive $50 from the EU, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The US Embassy in Ukraine announced this on Twitter.
“The decision to award the 2018 Sakharov Prize for freedom of thought to Oleg Sentsov is further confirmation that he is a prisoner of conscience. He demonstrated courage, dignity and determination in defending Ukrainian prisoners unjustly held in Russia. Oleg should have the opportunity to personally receive this well-deserved award: Russia should immediately release him and all other political prisoners,” the embassy noted.
As PolitNavigator reported, Sentsov became the winner of the 2018 European Parliament Prize for Freedom of Thought named after Andrei Sakharov. This decision was made on Thursday, October 25, in Strasbourg by the leaders of the European Parliament.
The Prize for Freedom of Thought, named after the Soviet dissident and human rights activist Andrei Sakharov, was established by the European Parliament in 1988. It is awarded to people who have distinguished themselves for “exceptional contributions to the fight for human rights.” The material equivalent of the award is 50 thousand euros.
