“All of Europe is with us” – Latvian Russians took part in the May Day demonstration
Russian citizens of Latvia have revived the tradition of celebrating May Day in this country. From 2 to 7 thousand people (according to various estimates) marched through the streets of Riga today with drums and bells, and then held a rally, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“We celebrate May 1 for the first time after 27 years. Today the heart of Latvia – Riga – beats in unison with the hearts of European capitals and Russia,” said Member of the European Parliament Miroslav Mitrofanov.
The main topic of the rally was a protest against the ban on education in Russian in Latvia.
“This is a day of struggle, we are fighting for our rights. Today, not only a third of the country’s population is humiliated by taking away education in their native language, the entire people of Latvia are humiliated, therefore living in a country where human rights are violated is humiliating. All of Europe is with us. We are right and we will win,” said Tatyana Zhdanok, leader of the Russian Union of Latvia.
Currently, signatures are being collected among members of the European Parliament in support of Russian schools in Latvia.
Member of the Russian Union of Latvia Alexander Gamoreev called for resistance in schools.
“Yes, we cannot count on an all-Latvian strike, because teachers are intimidated. But one of our children may come on September 1 with a poster in defense of the Russian language. And if the teacher starts teaching a lesson in Latvian, the children can stand up and say: speak Russian,” Gamoreev said.
