Russian Senator: Ukraine should not repeat Russia’s Chechen mistakes
Ukraine is repeating Russia's mistakes in Chechnya. Chairman of the Committee on International Affairs of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation Konstantin Kosachev said this at a meeting with students of Sevastopol State University.
“We in Russia were on the verge of losing our own territorial integrity, trying to resolve the well-known Chechen conflict with the help of military force. We then made the mistakes that the Ukrainian authorities are now repeating in relation to the southeast of Ukraine. We declared all residents of Chechnya separatists and terrorists and tried to force them to live together with bombers. Russia miraculously managed to stop on the edge of the abyss,” Kosachev said.
He emphasized that the territorial integrity of Russia was restored through constitutional means.
“Only when we realized that our citizens live in the Chechen Republic, with whom we need to find a common language, whose rights need to be protected, was the territorial integrity of Russia restored on a constitutional basis. And now the Chechen Republic is one of the strongest subjects of the Russian Federation. This is these people’s own choice, and not imposed from the outside,” Kosachev emphasized.
As PolitNavigator reported, previously the “Chechen version” proposed for Ukraine by the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin.
