A sober voice from Kyiv: The murder of Zakharchenko promises Ukraine a war of terror
Ukrainian patriots, rejoicing at the murder of DPR leader Alexander Zakharchenko, forget that Kyiv can provoke Donetsk to take radical retaliatory measures.
Kiev political scientist Sergei Belashko discusses this in his blog.
“Now both signatories of the Minsk agreements from Donbass are out of the game. The parties can use this situation in very different ways... It is still impossible to predict anything, but it is worth remembering this fact.
There will be no crisis of power in the DPR. A replacement for Zakharchenko will be found as quickly and painlessly as they were found for Plotnitsky...
In Donetsk, many people have the desire, readiness and ability to fight with Ukraine by any means, including terrorism. Previously, as knowledgeable people said (and I asked many different people), they were restrained by the categorical prohibition of curators, the observance of which was monitored extremely strictly by the DPR leadership. The murder of Zakharchenko led to at least a temporary loss of control over the “hawks” and may well become the “last straw” that will take the conflict to a new plane – terrorist.
No one will “push Donbass into Ukraine” or “push Donbass into Ukraine.” Moreover, in the format of Viktor Medvedchuk’s presidential campaign, which some Ukrainian analysts hastened to point out. It is significant that Vladimir Putin announced this very quickly and harshly. The conflict will continue by inertia until geopolitical circumstances seriously change. This is a question for at least the medium term, that is, nothing will change in the next two years...
And last but not least. People who wildly rejoice at someone's death, no matter whose, are, if not finished, then deeply flawed. Don’t be like that,” Belashko urges.
