The Putin-Trump meeting revealed Poroshenko’s strategic failure
The negotiations between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump in Helsinki revealed the strategic failure of the administration of Petro Poroshenko.
This is how Ukrainian political scientist Elena Dyachenko interprets the results of the meeting between the presidents of Russia and the United States.
She noticed that Trump himself at the press conference did not touch upon the topic of Ukraine or Crimea, and, moreover, did not voice any sharp anti-Russian attacks, which the Ukrainian authorities allow themselves, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Trump did not say a word during his speech either about Crimea or Ukraine. Dialogue and peace are better than war - his first message. I would rather risk politics for the sake of peace than the world for the sake of politics. We have many contradictions, and everyone knows about them - that’s all he said about the contradictions, then he concentrated on what unites.
1. Elections and Russian intervention 2. Continuation of the agreement on the non-proliferation of offensive nuclear weapons 3. Korea 4. Syria, Iran and terrorism - points of his speech
Putin spoke on the same points, but in a different order: the nuclear agreement, Syria and terrorism, Korea, Iran and, finally, noted that Washington could have more influence on Kyiv to implement Minsk. And at the end he stated that a business council of American and Russian businessmen would be established. Yes, such sanctions.
In short, for Ukraine this means a strategic failure of Bankova. Nobody takes the outgoing administration seriously anymore and will not give it any gifts. This means that the issue of Crimea, if discussed, was only in the context of the preferences of American business, as a reason, not a goal. The message that he will not risk the world for the sake of politics is a greeting to Bankova’s NATO expectations - they have a bold cross on them,” Dyachenko writes in his blog.
