“Russia is now in a situation where it is not achieving the goals it has set for itself. She thought that after the intervention Ukraine would become pro-Russian. But the seizure of Ukrainian territory had the opposite effect. Ukraine is more united, more nationalist, more Western-oriented, more anti-Russian than before,” Volker said.
He believes that time is working against Russia, since the situation is constantly getting worse, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“This gives reason for optimism because the calculation may be different. The ability to maintain a frozen conflict will not benefit anyone. There may be a solution. I hope the US can help change the situation. The United States intends to help to the extent possible. Our goal is the restoration of Ukrainian sovereignty and territorial integrity, and security. Providing military equipment to Ukraine can only offend a potential aggressor,” Volker said.
According to him, although the main focus is now on Eastern Ukraine, this does not mean a change in the position on Crimea.
“I would not like to create the impression that we have forgotten about Crimea. We view the situation in the east and in Crimea as one and the same situation. Occupation took place there, and in the situation with Crimea, annexation took place. There is only one principle: this is unacceptable. If we can show progress in one of these areas, let’s do it, but let’s not forget that the situation is the same in both cases,” Volker said.
