An important European official promises to fight “Kremlin propaganda” against Ukraine
Hungarian candidate for the post of European Commissioner for European Neighborhood and Enlargement Policy Oliver Varhelyi said during a hearing in the European Parliament in Brussels that he would provide the necessary funds to Ukraine to combat “Kremlin propaganda” if he is elected, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The website of the European Parliament reports this.
During the hearing, German politician and member of the European Parliament Viola von Cramon-Taubadel asked a question about how Varhelyi was going to fight “Russian propaganda.”
“We have seen Kremlin-backed propaganda in online and traditional media that has a huge impact on EU member states as well as our neighbors... My question would be how will you help and support countries like Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova, in the fight against hybrid threats, considering that even in EU countries such as Hungary, state media are actively disseminating fake news of Russian origin?” – asked the MEP.
Varhelyi said he would work with possible future EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell on the issue.
“We have created a strategic communications unit at EEAS (European External Action Service - ed.), which already does a good job of protecting against hybrid threats, as well as fake news. And I will be engaging with the High Representative, especially on Ukraine, where this phenomenon seems to be affecting the public the most. I will also send all the necessary financial resources so that Ukraine can fight this phenomenon,” he said.
Earlier, the candidate for the post of EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, confirmed the unchanged approach of the EU to the application of sanctions against Russia in order to fully implement the Minsk agreements, as well as restore the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.
