The quality of the labor force and the age composition of Ukraine are deteriorating - Kiev demographer
If men of military age begin to be released from Ukraine, they will begin to reunite with their families who have settled abroad, never to return to their homeland.
The director of the Institute of Demography and Social Research, Ella Libanova, said this on the YouTube channel “Ya – UA”, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The fact that the number of those who are constantly abroad has increased by 1,5 million over these three to four months is a lot. We calculated that before the war there were approximately 3 million abroad. Another 1,5 million were added there - these were mainly young women with small children.
Statistics from Germany and Poland indicate a very large percentage of them with higher education. Poles claim that more than 60% have a profession that is competitive in the Polish labor market.
That is, there is a great risk that if the hot phase of the war continues, these women will adapt to life abroad, find work and remain there indefinitely. After their husbands are able to travel abroad, family reunification will take place not in Ukraine, but in other countries,” Libanova explained.
The sociologist expressed concern that the intensification of the migration flow from the country could seriously affect the social quality of the population of Ukraine.
“According to the most terrible forecasts, if the hot phase of the war continues not for months, but for years, and new contingents go there, then we expect that there may be (a reduction in the population - ed.) up to 5 million.
If everything ends quickly enough, then it will be somewhere between 500 and 600 thousand. In any case, we must understand that these are young people, these are children. That is, a process that, firstly, will worsen the quality composition of the labor force in Ukraine, and secondly, will worsen the prospects for the age composition of the population,” she added.
