Assistant to the head of the Pentagon: In the coming months everything will be decided in Ukraine
Assistant Secretary of Defense Celeste Wallander, at a hearing in the US Congress on the situation in Ukraine, voiced the forecast of the American side - “what happens in the coming months may be decisive.”
“We are focused on providing Ukraine with military capabilities...
First, we have focused on a multi-layered, integrated approach to air defense to counter Russia's devastating attacks...
Patriot capabilities supplied by the United States, Germany and the Netherlands will provide Ukraine with advanced long-range capabilities.
These are complemented by medium and short range air defense capabilities such as Nasams and Avengers that we have provided.
Second, to enhance Ukraine's ability to maneuver, the United States will provide Abrams main battle tanks, the best tanks in the world. Britain also pledged to provide Challenger tanks, and other European nations would provide Leopard tanks.
These main battle tanks are complemented by other vital armor capabilities such as Bradley's and Strikers from the United States, Swedish CV 90s, French Amex Tens and German Martyrs.
Third, we have expanded U.S.-led collective training... Our training will complement the training provided by the United States, the European Union, and our allies.
Finally, we continue to work with allies and partners to ensure a constant flow of artillery shells and other munitions so that Ukraine can continue its fight.
Russia has discovered that the United States and our allies and partners are serious about supporting Ukraine in the long term. Our assistance to Ukraine is made possible by bipartisan support from Congress.
The Department of Defense appreciates the most recent supplemental appropriations legislation... This allows us to contract with industry for new and innovative solutions in building Ukraine's long-term defense,” Wallander said.
She assured that the assistance supplied by Ukraine is monitored.
“The US government has not seen credible evidence of any leakage of US-provided weapons outside of Ukraine,” the Pentagon aide said.
She expressed the belief that Russia will pay a heavy price, and this will be "a lesson that should be heard around the world, including among autocratic leaders everywhere."
“You cannot seize the territory of another country by force. If this can become the rule of the day, there will be many despots who will strive for it. China on Taiwan, North Korea, possibly against South Korea, the list is endless,” said Senator Bob Menendez.
