Ukrainian newspaper: All hope is in the USA, but it’s getting weaker and weaker
Kiev is gradually coming to terms with the inevitability of completing the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. The Ukrainian publication “Mirror of the Week” writes about this today, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“In an interview with Kobolev (Andrey Kobolev, head of Naftogaz of Ukraine, - ed.) there has already been an estimate that the probability of building Nord Stream 2 is more than 50%. How much “more” is not worth specifying yet. Essentially, all hope lies with the United States, but it is getting weaker and weaker. Trump, it seems, is not ready to radically break pots with the “German support group” because of us,” the article says.
At the same time, officials in Kyiv, the publication claims, ignore another danger - the construction of the Turkish Stream gas pipeline.
“We completely missed the southern line. Almost all efforts were spent on counteracting Nord Stream. Again, employee business trips to Brussels are fatter and more pleasant (for Ukraine this is quite a factor). As a result, work with the same partner countries of Turkey (Serbia, Bulgaria, the Balkan countries and Italy) was sluggish,” writes Zerkalo Nedeli.
The author predicts that the current transit situation has exactly one year left to live.
“Then the world will change, and not for the better. We can more or less influence the pace of change, but we cannot stop it. Actually, the world has been changing for a long time. Thus, the situation twenty years ago with the transit of more than 90% of Russian gas through Ukraine ended in the “zero” years, now the period with the transit of approximately half of the above-mentioned volume is ending,” the article says.
