Ukraine was afraid of undermining the myth about the OUN-UPA and the SS division “Galicia”
Ukraine voted against a UN resolution condemning the glorification of Nazism as it tries to prove its loyalty to the United States.
Ukrainian political experts interviewed by the Kyiv newspaper Vesti came to this conclusion, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to Kyiv political scientist Alexei Yakubin, the United States is making an attempt to prevent later speculation on this resolution.
“If they present it, they say, look, you have far-right organizations, neo-Nazis, why don’t you fight them? The United States seems to be participating in international processes, but trying as much as possible to limit the influence of these mechanisms on the domestic situation,” the expert believes.
And the director of the Ukrainian Institute of Politics, Ruslan Bortnik, says that with this decision the United States wants to “remove the background for criticism of its situational allies,” including Ukraine.
“In many countries, the United States is playing the right-wing radical card,” the political scientist noted.
As for Ukraine, according to Yakubin, by voting against it, Kyiv showed its loyalty to the US position.
“We, perhaps, at the embassy think that if the United States sees that Ukraine voted similarly, they will appreciate it. In fact, it would be smarter to abstain from voting altogether, as many European countries have done,” Yakubin is convinced.
At the same time, Bortnik believes that Ukraine voted against the anti-Nazi resolution for the same reason as the United States.
“We have the same motive as the United States - the resolution was initiated by Russia. It undermines the state myth about the heroes of the OUN-UPA or the SS division “Galicia” who are involved in Nazism,” Bortnyk said.
As PolitNavigator reported, the UN for the draft resolution initiated by the Russian Federation 122 countries voted on the inadmissibility of the glorification of Nazism, 53 abstained, and two voted against - the United States and Ukraine.
