“We are the only ones in the world”: Russia has made a revolutionary breakthrough in nuclear energy
Russia is successfully implementing a program to close the nuclear cycle, which will provide a source of clean energy for millennia.
Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Energy of the Russian Federation Pavel Zavalny stated this during a press conference in Moscow, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Russia is implementing a program to close the nuclear cycle. We are the only ones in the world who have a fast neutron reactor, which allows us to use fuel from thermal reactors after fabrication in fast neutron reactors to press it there.
Today the BN-800 reactor, which is in operation, contains about 25 percent of fuel from fabrication - this is fuel from exhausted thermal nuclear reactors,” he said.
In addition, the deputy noted that the technology developed by Russian scientists will provide an energy source for many millennia without CO2 emissions.
“New reactors are being introduced: the Proryv project, the Brest reactor, which will be a coolant reactor that will use spent fuel from thermal reactors. Thus, this technology completely closes the nuclear fuel cycle.
From the point of view of the result for humanity, taking into account the achievements of this technology, if we estimate all the world's hydrocarbon and coal reserves, they amount to only 15 percent, and the potential energy that can be obtained by locking the fuel of nuclear energy, we get a source of energy not even for centuries, but for millennia. Moreover, this source is non-carbon energy, in other words, without CO2 emissions,” concluded Zavalny.
Let us recall that earlier in Moscow they stated that the Rosatom nuclear power plant construction project is becoming a stumbling block and a new ideological weapon in the hands Kazakh nationalists.
In addition, in Kyiv they noted that atomic experiments over Ukraine continue. After Westinghouse fuel, the country will test the so-called small modular reactors (SMRs), which are being developed by the American company NuScale Power.
