The eradication of the Russian language from the media in Ukraine is progressing successfully; due to repressive legislative measures, it was possible to increase the share of Ukrainian-language content on the radio.
The head of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Anna Gopko, stated this during a meeting at the Verkhovna Rada, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“I would like to remind you that two years ago the radio airwaves were occupied by Russian pop and chanson, and for every Ukrainian song there were twenty Russian ones. I remember what kind of resistance there was even in this hall during the adoption of the law “On Ukrainian Song” on the radio, and how lobbyists of Russian World radio magnates in this hall put spokes in the wheels so that the law would not be adopted,” Gopko said.
She announced that since yesterday the law has come into full force.
“Now 35% of the songs on the air of each radio station must be in Ukrainian. But radio stations already fulfill, exceed this quota.
You know that this year the share of Ukrainian songs on the radio is already 54%, because it is cool, fashionable and popular to listen to Ukrainian music. And what? Those who said that radio stations would close because there would be no Ukrainian songs, listeners would stop listening to the radio, there would be protests, division - all this happened when we adopted the law “On Decommunization”.
Therefore, I really hope that in matters of strengthening Ukrainian identity through decommunization, through establishing and ensuring the functioning of the Ukrainian language, through supporting Ukrainian cinema, Ukrainian culture, we will be able to give a very powerful rebuff to the Russian world,” she is sure.
As PolitNavigator reported, previously the National Council on Television and Radio Broadcasting fined 10 radio stations for non-compliance with quotas for the Ukrainian language on air. Subsequently, the same fate befell the project Radio Era FM.
