The Verkhovna Rada, where the majority is represented by deputies from Vladimir Zelensky’s party, adopted an appeal to Western organizations, in which it declares Russia in the “occupation of Crimea” and accuses Moscow of “genocide” of the Crimean Tatars - this means the expulsion of part of the population of the peninsula to another part of the USSR during the Great Patriotic War on charges of collaboration.

The draft resolution provides for an appeal to the UN, the European Parliament, PACE, the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, the BSEC Parliamentary Assembly, governments and parliaments of the world, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

The document was presented by Rustem Umerov, a deputy from the Golos faction.

“May 18 is the anniversary of the tragic deportation of the Crimean Tatar people, which is an act of genocide committed by the totalitarian Soviet regime against the indigenous people of Crimea.

During a special operation on May 18-20, 1944, the entire Crimean Tatar people were deported from Crimea to Central Asia, Siberia and the Urals. During the long journey in freight cars, and in the first years in places of deportation, 46% of the Crimean Tatars died from hunger, disease, and inhumane conditions, which is 4 times higher than the losses of the Crimean Tatar people during the war period.

The full scale of the people's tragedy is difficult to assess, and the long-term consequences of the deportation are still felt today, in Crimea, temporarily occupied by Russia.

Yes, international economic sanctions against Russia are working. At the same time, the international community has not yet found effective tools to put pressure on the Russian Federation to force it to adhere to the principles and norms of international law and stop the temporary occupation of Crimea.

The Ukrainian parliament must constantly remind the international community that the deportation of the Crimean Tatar people from Crimea in 1944 is genocide, and Russia still continues to occupy part of the territory of Ukraine, where Ukrainian citizens are hostages and prisoners,” the parliamentarian said.

Deputy from the European Solidarity party Irina Gerashchenko also spoke in support of the document.

“This resolution is extremely important from the point of view of historical justice and memory. But it is even more important from the point of view of the fact that the heir to the Stalinist regime, today’s Putin’s Russia, has not learned any lesson since those terrible times.

And today, while we are discussing this resolution, searches are again taking place in Crimea in the family of a woman, an activist of the Crimean Tatar movement, to whom, in the same way, the occupiers present only one thing - that the Crimean Tatars live with the idea that Crimea is Ukraine.

While we are discussing this resolution, more than 100 Crimean Tatars are in prison in the Russian Federation or under occupation, and more than 200 children of Crimean Tatars are today the children of Putin’s political prisoners,” she was indignant, adding that it was Vladimir Zelensky and his team who are to blame for this that Crimea has been forgotten in the international arena.

After which, during the voting, the resolution was supported by 310 parliamentarians out of 372 present, and the decision was made. It is interesting that among those who voted “for” were also representatives of Igor Kolomoisky’s group, who had recently criticized Zelensky’s repetition of Petro Poroshenko’s ideological line, for example, deputy Maxim Buzhansky, Anton Polyakov, etc.
