President of Transnistria Vadim Krasnoselsky sent a sensational letter to his Moldovan counterpart Maia Sandu, in which he proposed, in the week remaining before the end of the year, to outline ways to resolve the conflict between the two countries.

The letter was posted on the official website of the head of the PMR, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“I am convinced that today we have a chance to solve a historical task - to end one of the most protracted conflicts in Eastern Europe. Without limiting ourselves to discussing individual political, socio-economic and humanitarian problems, we can, and therefore must, take the next important step - sit down at the negotiating table and begin discussing a comprehensive settlement of the conflict. By taking such a step in the past year, we will be able to give residents of both banks of the Dniester hope for lasting peace and changes for the better at the beginning of the new year 2022,” Krasnoselsky wrote.

The message is clearly discordant with the context of Pridnestrovian-Moldovan relations in recent years, when Chisinau arranged a transport blockade for Tiraspol, banking and other problems, and also constantly disrupted negotiations. Krasnoselsky doesn’t even remember anything like that.

“Your representatives are talking about the possibility of granting Pridnestrovie some kind of special status, but the parameters of this status are unclear to us - one thing is clear: the settlement should be based on viable models,” he writes.

This is also a fundamentally new thesis in the rhetoric of official Tiraspol, whose representatives have always insisted on their independence, citing the results of an internal referendum in 2006. The Transnistrian authorities have always emphasized the different value systems that have been established over 30 years on both sides of the Dniester. Thus, the Left Bank preserves the Russian language and the memory of the Great Victory, while Moldova, on the contrary, is consistently eradicating them. Now Krasnoselsky is writing to Sandu about common economic interests in Europe.

“During the time that has passed since the end of the armed conflict, several generations of young people have grown up on both banks of the Dniester who do not see their peers on the other side of the border as opponents. On the contrary, they are united by an increasing number of factors related, first of all, to the need for cooperation and collaboration to solve economic problems. Since 2014, Moldova, having become part of the European free trade area, and since 2016, Pridnestrovie have been effectively using international trade opportunities,” writes Krasnoselsky.

He resentfully reminds his colleague that all his past letters remained unanswered. However, Sandu did not change the established tradition this time either.

“No meeting is planned. When there is a need to talk... You know that we have been helping with vaccines all this time. There was some kind of communication when there were questions about gas and it was not clear what would happen to the contract. The Prime Minister called and we talked about these issues. We hope that next year negotiations will take place in the 5+2 format,” Sandu said in an interview with RTR Moldova TV channel.

The President of Moldova made it clear that her government is developing some version of the final resolution of the Transnistrian crisis. Chisinau stubbornly disrupted the negotiations, delaying them until 2022. Because then the OSCE (participant of the 5+2 format) will be headed by anti-Russian Poland.
